Temperament Tools: Working With Your Child's Inborn Traits

A pediatrician's perspective
This book is right on the money!I stumbled across this book at my library, and it has helped me understand my daughter more than any other book. The practical explanations of temperament traits are excellent. But better yet are the "temperamental" descriptions of the different children--my daughter is Tiganda Tiger 100 %! My husband and I have used many of the techniques recommended for dealing with our daughter and found them to be very successful. I have become such a convert that I am now teaching temperament traits to my students in middle school.
My child's behavior made more sense after reading this book.Easy to read guide to understanding my child. It has been helpful when working with other children in a professional way. Can highly recommend it to parents and prfessionals. This book gives new insight into how a child ticks.

Their Trotsky and Ours
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (August, 2002)
Average review score:

revolutionary fighters look to their rootsIn an age when revolutionaries come from different family trees, how do you look at the legendary Leon Trotsky, and his theory of "permanent revolution," that colonial countries can move directly from capitalist governments to workers governments? Jack Barnes, Socialist Workers Party national secretary, examines this issue in an article based on a 1982 speech.
Back to LeninTheir Trotsky And Our, by Jack Barnes, is a timely reprint twenty years after it was first published. Based on a talk before 1000 working class fighters from the United States and around the world, this talk was earth shattering for those who looked mainly to Leon Trotsky. It reclaimed the political perspective and the strategic centrality of the worker and farmer alliance in the fight to defeat capitalism. And it re-knit ties with Bolshevism and the Communist International in Lenin's time. This enhanced rapprochement with genuine communists of the day: the Cubans and other serious fighters world wide.
As James P. Cannon, a founder of the U.S Communist Party, a delegate to two congresses of the Communist International and later a founder and a central leader of the Socialist Workers Party and the Fourth International said : "It is not a new movement, a new doctrine, but the restoration, the revival of genuine Marxism as it was practiced in the Russian Revolution and in the early days of the Communist International." Thus "Their Trotsky and Ours" places Trotsky where he belongs in history as the twentieth century's greatest Marxist-Leninist, second only to Lenin.
A guide to a revolutionary futureThis document is a summation of the lessons of history of revolution. In its way it is in line with the Communist Manifesto, with the fundamental documents of the Comintern, knitting together the history of world revolution, and of its Marxist vanguard in particular. This is not just about Trotsky and his contributions, butabout how the Cuban communists fit into the continuation of Leninism, of what lessons we can learn from the crushed revolutions in Grenada and Nicaragua and the revolution led by Thomas Sankara in Burkina Faso. There is so much, how Lenin's understanding of the importance of reaching out to farmers is true today, how new currents of workers searching for communist answers will keep emerging as they did in Cuba. This book rejects the sectarianism that characterizes many who call themselves Trotskyists for the genuine Leninism that Trotsky was recruited to and fought to continue. It tells how Trotsky learned Leninism, and how Trotskyists have learned like Trotsky did, not to be Trotskyists, but to be communists. For many, this pamphlet will take them back to the founding documents of the Communists International. For others this will take you to the continuing revolutionary politics of Fidel and the other Cuban communists. If you are serious about changing the world, you need to read this, study this, and follow the links this important book takes you to revolutionists throughout history and around the world. Rather than looking back at history, this book willtake you forward to see where new revolutionists, new currents of revolutionists, new revolutions will come in the future.

The Triumphant Marriage: 100 Extremely Successful Couples Reveal Their Secrets

Might have saved my marriage had I read it sooner...This is a great book, it would be great for couples to read together if they're planning on getting married. When my marriage broke up I was so devestated and for some reason reading books like this helped me to feel better, I guess because it helped me to understand the problems I experienced a little better, and helped me to see where things went wrong, and what I never want to repeat. I have never witnessed a happy, lasting marriage, so I didn't have much to go on. If you're thinking about getting married, or having problems in your marriage and trying to figure them out, I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.
This is my preferred wedding gift to every newlywed!I bought this book 2 years before my marriage broke up. Had my wife been a willing partner, I am sure we could have enjoyed a triumphant marriage. It is one of the best practical books I have read on relationships. I gave this book to one of this areas recognized divoce counselors and she was so impressed with its content, she hopes to use the information in it as a resource for counseling groups on saving their marriages.
Recommended for both strong and struggling marriages. There are many authors who discuss their theories on what makes a strong, healthy marriage. What I especially like about "The Triumphant Marriage" is that Neil Clark Warren went directly to the "real" experts -- 100 very successful couples -- and asked them what made their marriage triumphant. The top 10 secrets each have their own chapter with practical suggestions of how to improve your marriage in that particular area. As a Christian Counselor, I am always searching for books to refer to my couples -- I have made "The Triumphant Marriage" required reading!

You and your children will love Winnie and WilburI found this book at the library. My 4 and 6 year old love it so much they asked for their own copy to have for always. Winnie's whole house is black and so is her cat Wilbur. This presents a problem when Winnie trips over Wilbur several times. She decides the solution is to magically turn him multi-colored but Wilbur is so unhappy Winnie changes him back and comes up with a much better solution. Any child will love this endearing story. Winnie the Witch is a great read anytime of the year.
Will capture kids imaginationsA wonderful brilliantly illustrated book. It's impact has been so large in the UK, that children now draw their witches with socks the same colour as Winnie's.
Not just for Halloween.

The Working-Class Fight for Peace (New International, No 2)
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (September, 1999)
Average review score:

a clear answer to a complex questionHow do you fight against capitalist war? To answer this question, you have to begin with the origins of these wars. If you think war comes from misunderstanding, or venial politicians, then you?d think international agreements could turn down the threats. Brian Grogan, a leader of Britain's Communist League, argues differently in this 1983 article. Conflicts among capitalist nations, and hostility to anticapitalist and anticolonial revolutions, come from the very nature of the imperialist system, and the direction of our fire has to be aimed at its source. This volume also contains two articles on the development of what socialists have called ?the aristocracy of labor?, a narrow, privileged section of the working class that serves as a base of support for the union bureaucracy and the capitalist system it supports.
How to end war for goodThe lead article in this issue of New International was written as the US was carrying out its bloody contra war in Nicaragua; just months before the US invaded Grenada; and during a time when Reagan called the Soviet Union the "evil empire" and built up the US nuclear arsenal. Ancient history? The Nicaraguan Revolution went down to defeat, Stalinism fell apart in Europe; but really, not a lot has changed. The US is at war in Afghanistan; it's threatening war again in Iraq; and now we have Bush's "axis of evil," just a slight change in wording. Once again, many progressive-minded people are confronting the question: how do you end war? This article gives a clear answer to this question which exposes a lot of the fake answers out there, such as, elect a Democratic President instead of a Republican; campaign for "peace," in general; or lobby Congressmen to stop producing more nuclear weapons. The article explains that the only road to lasting peace will be a working-class revolution worldwide. Anything short of placing the world's working-class majority at the center of this strategy is bound to fail. As the Enron and other scandals further erode many workers' faith in capitalism and as they begin to mobilize to defend their interests, the message of this book is more relevant than ever.
Roots of Social POatriotismAlthough anti-American sentiment is widespread around the world, there remains a layer of relatively privileged workers who wave the flag of imperialism harder with the approach of war. Two of these articles analyze this social layer (which exists in every imperialist nation) and how it is used to transmit patriotic, pro-war sentiment within the working class. The lead article outlines how the working class can be led to fight as part of an international class against imperialism and its drive toward war and depression. The articles are clear, well-written, and absolutely relevant.

Abraham Clark and the Quest for Equality in the Revolutionary Era
Published in Hardcover by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Pr (December, 1982)
Average review score:

The uniquely American struggle for equalityThis is a masterful study of the political and economic undercurrents of the American Revolution. Abraham Clark, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, was an advocate for the middle and working classes. He fought against privilege in every form, often pitting himself against the most powerful, and wealthy, leaders of the Revolution. He feared that America would establish a country in which the domination of the poor by the wealthy would continue. He was also concerned that "new sources of tyranny" would "arise from American centers of power." His economic ideas and initiatives centered on "leveling the playing field" and are still worth considering. Most of his work was in this area, both on the national and state level. Called an "excentric genius" by one of his enemies, Clark's actions were extremely popular among the people of his district. He was held publicly accountable for every major bill which passed during his tenure in the state legislature. As a member of Congress, he was an ardent supporter of James Madison's policies and measures in the area of commerce.
It will make you re-think the American RevolutionThis is a masterful political and economic study of the Revolution, from the point of view of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence who was an advocate of the middle and working classes. It contains economic, social and political ideas still worth considering. Abraham Clark represents a proud and unique tradition in America in which the idea of equality is central. He feared tyranny in the form of the wealthy gaining power over the poor, and institutions over the individual. As the author states, he fought every form of privilege: social, military, economic or political. His economic vision and ability made him a major player in shaping our new country.
Different children react differently to the world around them from the very start, and their inborn temperament traits usually persist. Active babies are likely to become active toddlers and preschoolers. The same is true, too, for babies who are sensitive, or persistent, or resistant to change, or easy to soothe. On the basis of their own extensive professional experience, authors Helen Neville and Diane Clark Johnson help readers assess children's temperament traits, understand the interactions between children's and parents' patterns of behavior, and learn how to provide the loving structure and support that can prevent challenges from becoming catastrophes. Ultimately, they provide practical, detailed, and accessible guidance for us in our efforts to help the children we care about learn to love, know, and respect themselves and others.
As a pediatrician working with parents, professionals, and friends to protect children's well-being during and after divorce, I draw freely and often from the material presented in Temperament Tools. As a professional or non-professional, you can expect heartfelt thanks from the relatives, teachers, and pediatricians to whom you give copies of this book. Beyond that, you can take pleasure in knowing how much you're helping the children whose lives they touch.
